However, he has been interested in all things audio-visual since he first started out as an electronics technician dealing with hardware such as television and computer desktops. He branched into his current vocation of overseeing video productions and converting VHS content to VCD after a brief stint in marketing.

Despite his training as an engineer and his technical know-how, his main passion lies firmly in the creative aspect, especially in working with his newlywed clients in coming up with the right concept and immortalising those precious moments on video. While speaking to him in the cosy confines of his Kim Seng Road studio (now at Bukit Merah Technopreneur Centre), he gave me some insight into his work process. "When potential clients approach me to help them put together a wedding video, I will first show them a fixed concept or template. The template merely gives the couple an idea of what their own video will look like. After that, I try to sound them out on their impressions of the template and get their feedback." He added that if clients wanted to adopt a different approach for their video, they would work closely together to bring to fruition the precise concept and storyline the couples want. Adrian has tackled themes of all sorts in his video productions, from a Grimms' fairytale-like storyline to one based on the movie Moulin Rouge.

A particular look that Adrian favours for all his video productions is a clean-cut, almost documentary-like style. His videos almost always incorporate the events that occur throughout the wedding day, from the make-up session in the wee hours of the morning to daytime events such as the tea or solemnisation ceremonies. He will follow the bridal party all the way until the nighttime festivities of the wedding banquet.

One of Adrian's specialities is what he calls 'express video highlights', which is basically a condensed film chronicle of the day's events. During the lull period between the daytime activities and the wedding banquet in the evening, Adrian will return to his studio and piece together the more interesting parts from the raw footage captured. This five-to-eight minute video screened during the wedding banquet itself, and has proved to be a smash among his clients.

According to Adrian, what makes him unique is the fact that he has a personal hand in all the shoots that take place instead of delegating it to a slew of videographers. He is involved every step of the way, from initial meetings with the couple right until post-production. He does have a pool of assistants to fall back on, but he retains final editorial and creative control of the video, so clients will still get the patina of quality they have come to expect from an Adrian Lee video.
